The European EUDI wallet is set to fundamentally change digital identification. In an interview with iX editor Kornelius Kindermann, IAM expert Michael Doujak explains which concrete use cases are already emerging, why companies should start engaging with the technology now, and what role modern IAM systems will play going forward.

New business cases enabled by digital identities

The EUDI wallet is designed to let citizens manage digital credentials securely and directly from their smartphone. For businesses, this opens up entirely new opportunities – from personalised ticketing solutions and simplified bank onboarding to automated processes for car rental companies or insurers. According to Michael Doujak, the success of the EUDI wallet will largely depend on how quickly companies and public authorities create tangible added value and integrate the wallet into their services.

IAM systems become the central orchestrator

With the introduction of the EUDI wallet, the role of classic identity and access management systems is changing too. going forward, they will need to orchestrate a range of different authentication methods – from traditional logins to the verification of Self-Sovereign Identities. At the same time, companies face strategic questions: which processes can be optimised with the EUDI wallet? What risks arise if competitors adopt the technology faster? Michael Doujak therefore recommends that companies identify concrete use cases now and lay the groundwork for future integration.
