Health Info Net AG (HIN)
More than 50,000 professionals and institutions use HIN to securely exchange sensitive health data. To deliver new digital services faster while continuing to meet high security and availability requirements, HIN fundamentally modernized its infrastructure, which had evolved over many years.
Together with specialized partners, HIN built a Kubernetes-native, GitOps-based platform on open standards. Within this platform, Airlock Microgateway brings routing, Web Application and API Protection (WAAP), and identity-based access control together directly in the cluster.
The combination of standardization and extensibility was decisive for us: Airlock Microgateway is built on the Kubernetes Gateway API, integrates natively into OpenShift, and supports our IAM integration through open standards such as OIDC and OAuth 2.0 Token Exchange. At the same time, we can meet highly specific requirements, for example by using ICAP for malware scanning or Lua.

How HIN benefits today
Greater control and resilience
HIN operates its applications across two independent cloud infrastructures. Airlock Microgateway can be deployed according to the same principles in both OpenShift environments, keeping the security layer cloud-independent.
Integrated security
Application protection and identity-based access control are enforced directly in front of the services. For particularly sensitive access, HIN can use step-up authentication to require additional levels of protection.
Faster deployments
Routes and security policies are managed as code in Git, reviewed, and automatically deployed. This has reduced deployment times from several hours to just a few minutes.
Clear responsibilities
The Kubernetes Gateway API role model allows the platform team to define central guardrails while application teams manage their own routes and security policies
